The Internet of Things (IoT)– A New Chapter in Internet History ?

Smart phones, smart cars, smart cities: The Internet of Things has changed the working landscape of most places on earth in a short time. However, in this transformative decade, we have learned that every innovation provides an equal level of re-engineered threat. From heart pacemakers to energy utilities to submarines to nuclear reactors – the list goes on. How do we protect these devices? Are there industry, international standards for security? Who is responsible? Who is accountable?
In this week’s deep dive, we ask four area experts to give us their views on how best to “grow” the IoT while ensuring its protection. We interviewed Ahmed Banafa, Engineering Professor at San Jose State University; Brian Russell, Chief Engineer Security Solutions, Leidos; Captain (Dr) Simon Reay Atkinson, University of Sydney and Royal Australian Navy Reserve and William Dutton, Professor of Media and Information Policy at the Ouello Center, Michigan State University, in order to grasp the complexity of the issue.

DHS: Agencies Need to Adopt Stronger Cybersecurity Standards
“No agency wants to make headlines for a security breach. After the Office of Personnel Management breaches in 2015, in which the personal information of 22.1 million current, former and potential federal employees (and their friends, neighbors and family members) was stolen, agencies were put on high alert. Now, the Department of Homeland Security is requiring agencies to take steps designed to mitigate future breaches.”
India, China, US Agree to Cooperate More on Cyberspace Security
“In a first, the United States, India and China have agreed to work together to make cyberspace a safer and secured place to live and work. A joint trilateral meeting between representatives from three countries was held on Thursday at the Vivekananda International Foundation, a New-Delhi based think tank. “

NATO Integrates Cybersecurity in Military Operations
“The defense ministers of NATO members states endorsed a set of principles for how the Alliance can integrate the cyber capabilities of its allies into alliance military operations. Ministers also agreed to the creation of a new Cyber Operations Center to help integrate cyber into NATO planning and operations at all levels. This follows steps last year to recognize cyber as an operational domain along with land, sea and air.”

Netherlands Central Bank Publishes Cybersecurity programme for Financial Core Payment Institutions
“On November 16, 2017, to further improve the financial sector’s resilience to cyberattacks, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the Dutch central bank, along with other financial institutions that make up the country’s financial core infrastructure (FCI), released a cybersecurity guide, also known as threat intelligence-based ethical red teaming (TIBER).”

Cyber Security Scheme Launches in UK Schools
“Schoolchildren will be encouraged to take up cyber security as a career in a government scheme. The initiative called ‘Cyber Discovery’ aims to ‘find the next generation of cyber security talent. With some £20 million worth of investment, the program is aimed at young people in years 10 to 13.”
